“It ain’t what you know that gets you into trouble—it’s what you know that just ain’t so!” (Mark Twain)
Jennifer Garner as the uptight, manipulative, conniving, conservative (in the worst sense of the word) but talented butter sculptor in the 2011 movie Butter. This is a movie so few people have seen that those of us who have, often think we’re the only person in the country who did! Shame, as it’s a good movie.
A Few Intimate Details
I am in a committed relationship with a woman who hates seeing her name on the Internet. 12
I am a renowned pizza snob. 13
F*cking bullies! 15
I am a Virgo who likes long walks alone in the dark in the city when it’s raining so that I can come home and cuddle up with my Internet-fearing woman and sip 10-year-old Laphroaig.
This art was done by Wally Wood for the cover of the 1979 edition of Robert Overstreet’s Comic Book Price Guide. It is an homage to the work that Wood did for the legendary EC comic books Weird Science and Weird Fantasy in the early ’50s.
1 But there are a number of albums that, when I am deep-listening and grokking them, could be considered a close second. This includes but is certainly not limited to: Bob Dylan’s Blonde On Blonde (1966), the Byrds’ Younger Than Yesterday (1967), The Band’s Music From Big Pink and the Rolling Stones’ Beggars Banquet (1968), Elvis Presley’s From Elvis In Memphis and the Kinks’ Arthur (1969), and the Beach Boys’ Sunflower (1970).
2 The Mary Ann Caws translation of 1973.
3 These are emotional choices from childhood; I love modern movies but wouldn’t know where to begin choosing a fave but if forced to make such a choice I would not be uncomfortable contemplating Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange (1971) and Richard Curtis’s Love Actually (2003).
4 I grew up loathing Grant—I can’t tell you why, but when I realized he was the greatest of all movie stars it was a most pleasing epiphany.
5 Ms Keaton and Ms Garner are easy choices, but I could have picked current crushes Catherine Zeta-Jones, Nicole Kidman, or Marisa Tomei.
5 I could name so many more: Ally McBeal, The Good Wife, Boston Legal, M.A.S.H, Next Generation, Weeds, etc.
6 Steve Ditko was a runner-up for ‘close second,’ but whereas Kirby was great from the 1940s into the ’70s, and Wood the ’50s into the ’70s, Ditko only held my attention in the ’60s with his work for Marvel and then (alas, briefly) Warren.
7 That’s a martini made my way—the old-fashioned way—which I have to stand at the bar and instruct the bartender to make because the response to “four-parts-gin-to-one-part-vermouth” is dumbfoundedness accompanied by temporary loss of motor coördination and a reflexedly-made modern 20-1 mix.
8 The 10-year old, not the 15-year old. (And I owe a nod of thanks to Philip Dick for turning me onto this manifestation of the water of life.)
9 And thank Wholly Grommett Above that we didn’t have the two back in the ’70s because my-oh-my what a combo they make!
10 I keep trying to like the bloody Seattle Mariners but ownership seems determined to keep most of us here in the sunny funny Pacific Northwest at arm’s length if not completely at bay.
11 Because as a Phillies fan I credit Rose with their first World Championship in 1980 to Rose. (While I don’t agree that merely betting on baseball should ban a player from the Hall of Fame, that is the rule and Rose should be kept out until the rule is changed.)
12 I would love to regale you with tales of my loves, my losses, my conquests . . . but that same Internet-fearing woman would have what’s left of my balls pickled in a jar on the mantle if I did.
13 I confess to a constant craving for Old Forge pizza with Arcaro & Gennel’s my fave.
14 Women reading this: Beware men who pathologically hate cats because it usually reflects their true feelings about you! (Just saying.)
15 All f*cking bullies: physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, and in this country, political and economical bullies.
16 Yes, I know that footnotes on a blog are affectatious and even pretentious as all get-out, but get used to them because I find them useful and the little buggers pop up on most of my pieces throughout this site . . .
